ILA launches alumni network to harness youth leadership for regional integration

The IGAD Leadership Academy (ILA) formally launched its Alumni Network during its Annual Alumni Conference, a highly impactful event that reflected the growing importance of youth leadership as a strategic pillar for peace, governance, and regional integration in the IGAD region.
The conference held on December 16, 2025, was graced by IGAD Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Former Kenyan President H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta as the keynote speaker, Senator Crystal Asige (Kenya) and ambassadors of Finland and Japan, among other distinguished leaders and partners.
Held under the theme “Harnessing Youth Leadership to Drive Africa’s Growth,” the conference brought together ILA alumni drawn from the initial three cohorts, alongside development partners, diplomats, and policymakers. The conference showcased how ILA alumni have translated leadership competencies acquired during training into tangible action, with participants reflecting on their leadership journey.
During the conference, the ILA Alumni Network was officially launched and regional and national leadership elected to steer the network’s initiatives. In a transparent process guided by principles of equity, gender balance, and regional diversity, the alumni selected a leadership team to serve a two-year term. The regional leadership comprises Ashenafi Mebratu (Chairperson), Sharon Kinyanjui (Vice-chair) and Mariam Hassan (Secretary). The three will work closely with country coordinators.
In their remarks, key speakers emphasised the urgency of cultivating leadership rooted in integrity and service, reminding the youthful alumni that the time is ripe for the youth to take the mantle. Saying that “ILA was built to bring young people together across borders to discuss critical regional matters”, Dr Workneh challenged the alumni to apply the skills learnt at the Academy to shape the future of the IGAD region.

In his keynote address, former President Kenyatta urged the alumni to see themselves as leaders of today, and take advantage of their youth and vigour to lead with impact.
“Leadership is not about power but about responsibility. True leadership is measured not by titles but by the impact one leaves behind,” he said.
Senator Crystal Asige delivered a powerful speech, defining leadership as “moving forward faithfully even when the future is unclear.” She urged the young leaders to be consistent and adamant in their pursuit of change.
“If not you, then who? If not now, then when?” she posed.
Finnish Ambassador to Kenya Riina-Riika Heikka underscored the importance of building trust and inclusive governance as a foundation for resilient and strong societies.
Representing the Japanese Embassy in Kenya, Mr Tomonobu Hori, the Deputy Chief of Mission, lauded the Academy’s mission to equip young leaders with skills to navigate the complexities of the region.
“The Government of Japan values this partnership with IGAD, and we look forward to seeing the tangible impact of ILA alumni in the years to come,” said Tomonobu.
Representing Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Mr Arthur Olanda commended IGAD for the initiative to mentor young leaders and reaffirmed Kenya’s support for the programme.
“Kenya will continue to support initiatives that invest in young leaders and strengthen regional cooperation. Platforms such as the ILA are essential to build the partnerships needed for a more peaceful and integrated region,” he said.
All speakers emphasised that the stability and prosperity of the region depend on leaders who are willing to act with courage, humility, and vision, and those who understand that peace and development are shared responsibilities.
The launch of the ILA Alumni Network is a critical step in strengthening the Academy’s long-term impact across the IGAD region. The network serves as a platform for sustained engagement, peer learning, mentorship, collaboration and joint action among ILA alumni, ensuring that the values and competencies gained through training translate into solid impact. By connecting alumni across borders and cultures, the network will consolidate coordinated initiatives, knowledge exchange and stronger visibility of youth-led solutions to regional challenges.
